Can AI do Mediation?
Preface to the Article Series
Monika Ortega y Strupp
Resolving conflicts is one of the most powerful human abilities. Doing this efficiently and thus saving resources not only brings immense advantages in terms of gaining a solution, but also on the path to it. This applies in every area, in small and large, in geopolitical, business and private conflicts.
Escalations cost strength and energy. The higher the level of escalation we find ourselves in, the more energy we have to expend. As a party to a conflict, being able to act with foresight in a conflict promises to be able to end a conflict to one's own advantage or to the advantage of all parties. Mediation opens up ways to find consensus solutions in which all parties involved win.
Currently, there is hardly an area in which the topic of
Artificial Intelligence
is not making inroads. In an area as important as conflict and conflict resolution, AI is not stopping there. And how exciting is it when AI can help us resolve conflicts?
In my work, I have realised one thing: AI is a very emotionally charged topic. Many people do not know how current AI systems work. They don't know what capabilities they have, what risks they entail and how best to deal with them. Reports of overwhelming AI achievements are at the top of the headlines, as are AI misuse, threats to jobs or the destruction of humanity. Naturally, this causes all sorts of - even strong - emotional reactions.
With the series of articles
Can AI do Mediation?
, I would like to give you the opportunity to move away from pure feelings about the topic of
Artificial Intelligence
and understand today's AI without drifting too far into the maths. I am happy for every reader who joins me in the exciting topic of mediation and AI. The first part of the series deals with analysing and predicting conflicts together with artificial intelligence and its capabilities.
I am of course happy to receive feedback. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Arthur Trossen, who gave me some of his time and interesting conversations in this context. I was very delighted about that. His Sein Wiki-to-Yes is a huge treasure trove of knowledge about mediation and its topics. My thanks also go to many other people who are dear to me and who are not spared from my stories about these topics.
And now I hope you enjoy the series of articles
